When you set out to find a mentor, you likely spent a lot of time defining exactly what they should be like. You focused on their experience, their industry, and their teaching style. But here’s the critical truth: A successful mentor-mentee relationship is a two-way street, and being a great mentee is just as important as finding a great mentor.
Your mentor can only do so much; your own commitment is what sparks real growth. Ready to level up your mentorship experience? Here are the essential characteristics of a phenomenal mentee.
1. Be Open to Impulses and Feedback 👂
This is the foundation of growth. If you’re not ready to listen, you’re not ready to learn.
- Listen Attentively: Absorb the experiences and insights your mentor shares. They’re giving you the benefit of their hard-won knowledge.
- Embrace Feedback (Especially the Tough Stuff): Accept and genuinely consider the feedback you receive, particularly if it challenges your current thinking.
- Engage, Don’t Just Defend: If you disagree, that’s okay! But present your perspective with solid reasoning rather than just defensiveness. The goal is a productive balance between listening and engaging.
2. Reliability is Non-Negotiable ⏰
Your mentor is investing their valuable time in you. Respect it by being utterly reliable.
- Follow Through: If you say you’re going to complete a task or read a resource, do it. Your actions build trust.
- Be Present and Punctual: Be on time for every meeting, and be fully engaged during your exchanges.
- Communicate Clearly: If life happens and you absolutely cannot make a commitment, cancel and reschedule with plenty of notice.
3. Embrace the Discomfort Zone 🦈
A mentor’s job is often to push you past what feels easy. Your job is to be willing to take the leap.
- Try the Experiment: Don’t be afraid of a little trial-and-error. Great mentors will encourage you to experiment and leave your comfort zone, ideally at a pace that suits your needs.
- When They Say Jump, You Ask “How High?”: When your mentor sees you’re ready for the next challenge, don’t hesitate but jump! This is where real transformation occurs.
4. Challenge Yourself 🌪
Mentorship provides the map, but you must drive the car. Define your destination and push yourself to get there.
- Define Your Next Step: Identify the next challenge you need to tackle and commit to getting there bit by bit.
- Understand Your Regeneration Zone: To avoid burnout, be honest about where your “regeneration zone” is and how much time you need there. Taking care of yourself is necessary fuel for embracing the unknown and continuous challenge.
5. Reverse Mentor 👐
A mentorship isn’t a hierarchy; it’s a partnership for growth, and that growth should flow both ways.
- Share Your Unique Insights: Towards the end of your relationship, or even throughout, be prepared to share your perspectives and experiences with your mentor.
- Offer Your Expertise: Maybe you’re familiar with a new technology, a recent market trend, or a younger generation’s perspective that they are unfamiliar with.
- The Power of Reversing: You will grow immensely by realizing that you have value to offer, too. It strengthens the bond and creates a truly reciprocal, valuable exchange.
Mentorship is a powerful tool for career and personal development, but its true success hinges on your active participation. By embodying these characteristics, you don’t just find a mentor but you become the kind of mentee every great mentor wants to invest their time in.
My favorite part is the reverse mentorship. I often find people amazed when they hear about it the first time because sometimes it just doesn’t dawn on someone that reverse mentoring is also a thing.
What mentor/mentee are you?
